Pioneering social-ad company Appssavvy has raised $7.1 million to build new technology around the idea that the future of online advertising lies in monetizing actions such as voting in a poll, checking into a location or leaving a comment. Founded in 2008, Appssavvy— one of Crain's Best Places to Work—started as a middleman, pairing advertisers and agencies with social-game developers like Zynga and Rockyou, but the company switched course over the past year, abandoned banner ads, and instead focused on new technology it dubbed "Adtivity," which targets ads attached to activities like updating status, earning virtual goods, completing a level or sending a message within a game. AOL Ventures joined existing investors including True Ventures and the New York Times Co. to bring the total amount raised to $10.2 million.

Appssavvy Inc. said it has added $3.5 million to its Series A funding round as it pursues a new delivery mechanism for advertising that's tied to people's actions. Chief Executive Chris Cunningham said activity-based advertising has the same potential that paid search and behavioral targeting had a few years ago. "We're not trying to compete with the industry, we want to be the industry," Cunningham said. "Our goal is to be the world's number one platform for 'adtivity.'" Adtivity is the name the company has created for activity-based advertising. More than 70 publishers and developers have partnered with appssavvy and integrated the adtivity platform and mobile product into activities representing opportunities for advertisers. Unlike existing technologies that deliver ads based on a page loading, the adtivity API is attached to the event of performing an activity, including updating statuses, collecting, sending and earning virtual goods, polls and contests, and completing a level, visiting a friend or sending a message within a game. Much of the company's focus today is on game publishers. The idea is that it's a way to reach consumers when they're highly engaged. The new funding will be used to increase engineering and sales efforts. The recent Series A-1 round of $7.1 million included all current investors and new investor AOL Ventures, and brings the total raised by appssavvy to $10.2 million. Appssavvy had previously raised $3.1 million from True Ventures, New York Times Co. and individual investors, including Scott Kurnit, founder of About.com and currently founder and CEO of AdKeeper Inc., and Howard Lindzon, co-founder and CEO of StockTwits Inc. Cunningham declined to provide revenue figures or a valuation for the New York-based company.
